|Mudgeon Vean Orchards
On our 18c, 55acre farm, we have planted our orchards on the gentle slopes of the valley above the Helford River. Here we are surrounded by ancient woodland which serves as a shelter for our trees and provides a huge array of birds and wildlife. We have several beehives provided by Gwenen Apiaries, which help to pollinate the orchards so we can get maximum production using natural methods. (we also get to eat some delicious honey made by local bees!)
We do not spray our orchards with chemical insecticides or weed killer and will continue to grow more trees in an environmentally friendly method.
Our trees are the Old Cornish Varieties local to the area such as Manaccan Primrose, Pigs Snout, John Broad and Tommy Knight, which we use to make cider and some desert apples such as Russet, Bramley, Sunset and Worcester Pearmain which are used in our juice.
Helford Creek Cyder is made using our own and local cider apples. The apples are washed, scratted (chopped) and pressed. The juice is then left to ferment until all the sugars have been turned to alcohol by the yeast. It is then racked off (filtered off) and left to mature in oak barrels, previously used for brandy or whiskey which can enhance a unique flavour.
Planted with mainly cider varieties, this orchard is situated on the Lizard peninsular.
This Orchard is in the heart of Sithney. A mixture of Cornish Gillyflower, Beauty of Bath, Rubinette and Discovery make this a medium sweet juice, full of the flavours of Cornwall.
Grown for use in an old convent, this orchard has a mix of desert and culinary apples of Bramley, Russett and some old Cornish varieties giving a sweet, mellow flavour.
Grown in a valley, this orchard has a mixture of Old Cornish Varieties, medium to sharp in flavour.
Orchards grown at Gear Farm, steeped in ancient history. Visited by Channel 4 TV’s Time Team. Home to apple trees such as Manaccan Primrose, Bens Red and Pear Apple.
